Groundhog Day! Early Spring expected!!!!

Hola! Back from Mexico – and ready to take on the spring!

It never ceases to amaze and thrill me, whenever I travel, to realize how truly blessed we are here in Manitoba!

The Western Retail Lumber Association trade show was recently held in Saskatoon. This a members only “buying show” with loads of opportunities to make good buys on existing product lines, as well as discover new lines to bring your way.

We spent considerable time with the CertainTeed folks and we will now be supplying both James Hardi and CertainTeed fibre cement siding – so please come and see us if you have any projects requiring these products in the future.

Ironically, with all the new suppliers to meet, we took the opportunity to talk to our core cladding/roofing suppliers and will have an increased supply of good “secondary” product for those of you who are interested. Lengths and colours will vary so let us know what you're looking for and we will watch for it on our lists.

One of the most exciting announcements for us at the show, was the recent purchase of Lily Fasteners by Prime Source. Our buying power with Prime Source will now allow us to carry a full range of fasteners, blades, tools and accessories – all geared at enhancing our offering to you and supporting our goal at being a one stop shop for you.

Also coming up - the Cottage Country Show at the downs March 11th weekend and the Home Expression Show at the Convention Centre - March 28th weekend. We'll be at both and ready to tackle any size project.

Happy New Year Everyone!!!

We are thrilled about the coming year! Construction and renovation prospects are booming here in Manitoba and we are poised to play our part in this exciting time!

New Products!
Our expanded product line ranges from metal-like interior panels, including ceilings, walls, and backsplashes, composite and polymer stone products, vinyl, metal and pre-engineered wood siding, and our core product line of metal roofing products including hidden fastener and exposed fastener panels.

And believe or not, our renovation is complete! We are moving our sales offices in January (just next door). We welcome you to come and see the beautiful finished product. It is even more spectacular than I could have imagined!

Great big thanks to our in-house designer, Janelle Fillion, who took our old, plain showroom and turned it into a piece of art! Who knew that displaying metal panels and products could look so sexy!!!

I think it's here - Winter that is!

Well, it always snows before Halloween and true to form we got one very, very light skiff of snow just days before the pumpkins were lit. But that’s been it so far! Every day without snow is just gravy from this point onward. But that little bit of snowfall was definitely a wake-up call.

OMG it's Fall!

Someone pinch me! What happened to July and August this year???? There they were ... gone!

Well, I know for a fact that all of you have been extremely busy – and thank you for your continued support throughout this crazy building and renovation season! Whoever said the economy is down, has obviously never been to Manitoba!

Our renovations continue – a little slower than I had anticipated, but only because we've been so busy, some design decisions and construction just had to take a back seat to sales and customer service! I'm confident the finished product will be worth the wait! Our new showroom will showcase a "village" that will showcase new product and great installation tips. I really look forward to each one of you coming down for a visit soon!

Overall, metal sales have been stronger than last year to date, with our new lines of vinyl siding and assorted exterior building products gaining ground as well.

We have a very exciting new panel program! We can now create beautiful decorative wall panels, 10' long and anywhere from 4” to 12” wide – flush fit to create a very modern looking, streamlined interior or exterior panel! You should see it in the Copper Metallic! Absolutely STUNNING! We have these on display so please come and see for yourself – a great addition to new builds or renovations!

Our continuous eavestrough division is certainly gaining ground! We've got an extensive aluminum color selection as well as white, brown, and forest green STEEL trough! Call Rick for chop'n'drop bookings or to arrange for an install if this is required.

Reality Check: Now is the perfect time to install SNOW GUARD – before it snows! We’ve got standard 10’ bar type as well as clear acrylic “snow brakes” – call for details!

This is also a great time to do trough, soffit and fascia jobs – good fall projects for those mornings when you can’t get on the roof due to frost!

July update - Expansion and New Product Announcement

Things are really heating up at Metal Depot these days!!! For those of you who haven't been in for a while – you're in for a surprise!

We're in the middle of our largest expansion to date – almost doubling the size of our showroom – a necessary step in order to showcase the ever growing and exciting new line up of products we now offer! We are really pleased to be able to meet all your exterior building material needs including house wrap, wood strapping, vapour barrier, Vinyl siding ( www.gentek.ca and www.mitten.ca ), pre-engineered wood siding (Canexel – www.canexel.ca ) as well as cultured stone and fibre cement board siding!!!! Talk about a “one stop shop”!!!

We have also doubled our shop space to increase efficiencies in production as well as to expand our warehouse, shipping and receiving areas – again – all geared to serve you better!

This move also became necessary as we introduce yet another exciting addition to our product offering – CONTINUOUS EAVESTROUGH!!! Yes, we have a wonderful new 5” and 6” continuous trough machine and hope to be visiting your jobsite soon! We are running primarily aluminium trough but also offer steel in white and brown for those jobs requiring a heavier product. With this offering we have significantly increased our stock in the soffit, fascia and additional rainware products as well – so do come in and check it out!

Our goal is to provide a first class, cost effective “Chop'n'Drop” service to contractors and end users. We are very excited to be covering all the cottage areas as well, including Kenora, Falcon Lake and beyond – and plan to run the ice roads this winter to accommodate water access only those cottagers with water access only.

Once again, for those who haven't been in lately – WOW – you are in for a surprise! For those of you we see on a regular basis – a huge THANK YOU for your continued support – without you none of this would be possible – and thank you so much for your patience as we tear down and rebuild around you!

Dust off the snow! I'm bettin' on an early spring!

With the Boat Show just around the corner and the Home Expression Show following on it's heels - it must be spring! (ok...almost!)

This has been an unseasonably mellow winter and an unexpectedly busy one for our team! It just hasn't stopped! (We're NOT complaining!)

Already our contractors are booking early spring jobs so if you're needing help I would strongly recommend that you get on your plans sooner than later.

Industry News:
There have been some significant mergers in the steel industry and talk of increasing prices coming up. We've only seen it actually happen with one supplier so far but we're watching things closely and trying to buy strong now before things change. Our goal is to keep a good selection of stock material on hand for those of you who need product in a hurry; but having said that, our suppliers assure us we will continue with one to two shipments per week so custom lengths are never more than a week away.

Product News:
We will be carrying VINYL SIDING this year - from a number of reputable and familiar suppliers so please call us for quotes!

SNAPLOCK (hidden fastener) and DECRA (stone coated) systems are becoming more and more popular and we will be promoting a number of different panels this year. These are typically best installed by a trained professional - but it's not "rocket science" so if you're prepared to spend the time, we can help you turn these HOT roofing options into a very satisfying "DIY" project (not for the faint of heart though!)

Synthetic Roof Paper and Ice & Water Guard: two products that should be included in any new roofing plans and most re-roofing ones as well. In the great scheme of things these two products offer very inexpensive insurance against leaks and ice damning. Ice & Water Guard is recommended at least 36" around the building envelope perimeter (44" on new builds) and is also highly recommended in valleys and around roof penetrations such as dormers, skylights and the like.

Stitch Screw/Lap Screw: There are many schools of thought on whether or not overlap panels should always use a lap screw (shorter, 7/8" metal screw that is used just on the overlap - just to pull the two layers of metal together). We will be including these on our quotes from now on and I encourage you to use them - especially in the following incidences: lower pitch (less than 4:12), high wind areas, and re-roof jobs where strapping is used. Some contractors swear by them and some swear at them! Discuss the details of your project with us and we can help determine the level of necessity. Or, just use them! 90% of all installation guides strongly suggest their use - and this way you can be confident you've done a first class, long lasting job.

Well, it's definitely fall, and a beautiful one at that! I actually got my Christmas lights up this past weekend - quite novel doing it when my fingers aren't freezing off!

Still lots of good weather ahead and we're prepared! I got a great buy last week on over 50,000 lbs of bright white, light ivory and some coffee brown and forest green roofing and wall cladding! Sheets come in 10'2", 12'2" and 16'2" (brown and green are 16's only!)

Volatility in the Metal Market - Buy Now!

Good afternoon...on this blustery Friday!
Just a quick update on the very volatile metal market. Most suppliers have announced initial raw material price increases with the 'warning' of more to come.
We had enjoyed a brief hiatus from fuel surcharges and raw material fluctuations - but, alas, the party seems to be over for the near future.
If there was ever a time to go forward with a planned reroofing job, renovation, or upgrade - NOW is that time.
Having said that, we've got some beautiful Heron Blue roofing on sale, as well as off white and galvalume! Now's the time!!!

TIP of the DAY:

Don't EVER install metal siding, roofing or trims in direct contact with pressure treated lumber! There are copper-salts introduced in the pressure treated process and the dissimilar nature of copper and pre-painted metal sheeting doesn't always work well together.

Well, we're off to a roaring start to the renovating/construction season - the "R" word that the rest of the world is experiencing certainly doesn't appear to have found it's way to our neck of the woods!
